    Description

    DETAILS:
Original pinback button issued by the Black Panther Party in support of Huey Newton run for Congress. Circa 1968. Measures 1 1/2" inches in diameter.
    Huey Newton
(1942–1989) was an African-American political activist and Marxist-Leninist revolutionary who, along with Bobby Seale, co-founded the Black Panther Party. The party was active in the United States with chapters in numerous cities. The core mission of the group was to organize the African American community in order to prevent police abuse, combat racial discrimination and promote the health and well being of the black population. The Party was specifically targeted by the FBI for their activities with Newton himself being charged numerous times. In 1967 he was charged with the murder of a police officer but the case was dismissed when it became clear that Newton had acted in self defense while hand cuffed and being assaulted by a group of officers. Newton is considered to be among the most important Black civil rights leaders in American history.
